The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) uses the Five Freedoms as a basis for writing animal care protocols and expectations for veterinarians and other professional groups. The Five Freedoms are:
- Freedom from hunger and thirstAnimals should have access to fresh water and a diet that keeps them healthy.
- Freedom from discomfortAnimals should be provided with an environment that’s appropriate for their care and use, taking into account their species’ biology and behavior.
- Freedom from pain, injury, and diseaseAnimals should be cared for in ways that minimize pain, stress, and suffering.
- Freedom to express normal behaviorAnimals should be able to express behaviors that are important for their physical and mental state.
- Freedom from fear and distressAnimals should be treated in ways that avoid mental suffering.
